The enterprises forming the basis of the town’s economy are as follows:
In the field of energy: The Azerbaijani State Thermoelectric Power Station and the chain of hydroelectric power stations (the Mingechevir Hydroelectric Power Station and the Varvara Hydroelectric Power Station);
In the field of electrical engineering: The Azerbaijani cable factory and the insulation factory;
In the field of machinery construction: The road building machinery factory, the experimental factory and the factory for the repair of road building machinery;
In the field of chemistry: The factory of technical rubber, the reclaimed rubber factory and the glass fiber factory;
In the field of light industry: The textile factory;
In the field of food industry: The meatpacking plant, two bread-baking plants, the fish factory and the factory for the production of non-alcoholic beverage;
In the field of construction: The timber factory, three ferroconcrete factories, the industrial products factory and four sandpits.
Seven of the aforementioned enterprises - the insulation factory, the Azerbaijani cable factory, the glass fiber factory, the road building machinery factory, the experimental factory, the technical rubber factory and the reclaimed rubber factory – are great monopolistic enterprises which have no analogues in the republic. The major part of the raw materials of these enterprises were used to be brought from the former Soviet Union (mainly Russia) and the products of these factories were used to be sent to the entire Soviet Union.
We should note that the equipments of these factories have been renewed basically and along with old brand products, new ones have been manufactured over the last 20 years.
The problems arisen over the raw material provision, the lost of the traditional market, expensive ultimate product and uncompetitive product force these enterprises to operate at 10% productive capacity.
Except for the energy enterprises, all the abovementioned enterprises were changed into joint-stock companies as a result of privatization carried out in the country.
The Azerbaijani State Thermoelectric Power Station, which is the largest thermoelectric power station in the South Caucasus, produces 65% of energy in the country. The station is made up of eight energy blocks with 300 MW power each. According to the project of the station, two more energy blocks should be constructed and put into operation in the future. The station produces 11-12bn kW/h of electricity in a year. A total of 2,500 people are currently employed in the station. The station functions both with gas and crude oil.

The factory was divided into two production sections for the nature of production – spinning and weaving sections. In turn, each section consists of from 5 to 7 workshops. The annual average output of the spinning section is 12,700 tons of thread, while the capacity of the weaving section is 58.6m meters of textile. The factory manufactures textile with 90, 107 and 165 cm width.

The factory used to use cotton cultivated both in the republic and the republics of Central Asia, while 70% of products used to be sent to stockinet factories in the republic to meet domestic needs.
A total of 10% of the capacity of both sections are currently explored. Apart from the main production sections, the factory has supportive sections like compressor department, transportation, boiler-house, repair shop, repair for construction and others. A total of 350 people are currently employed in this enterprise. The factory produced 3m meters textile and 528 tons of thread in 2001.
The enterprise has all engineering and communication facilities and is in good fettle for proper exploitation. The equipments used in the factory were produced mainly in the Soviet Union in 1960-1980.

The factory was put into operation in 1959. The products manufactured in the factory are as follows:
- High-voltage cables (10-35 square mm, production capacity - 12,600 km per year);
-
Control cables (up to 2.5 square mm, the number of wires 4-19, production
capacity 2,600 km per year);
-
A, AS, ASKS brand open wires (16-240 square mm, production capacity
18,000 tons per year);
-
Various types of wires (production capacity 50,000 km);
-
Household wires (6 square mm, production capacity 30,000 km)
The Azerbaijani cable factory is comprised of four main departments, one workshop for consumer commodities and eight supportive departments. The factory’s total area is 14.7 hectare, while its production area is 6,400 square meters. The number of employees of the enterprise was 900 in 1990.
The equipments of the factory were mainly bought from abroad – Germany, France, Hungary and CIS countries (Kazakhstan and Ukraine). These are mainly spinning, whirling, insulating, hose covering, rubber mixture producing and recycling equipments, which were mounted in 1980-1990.

The factory uses copper, aluminum, polyethylene and rubber mixture as raw materials, and these materials are imported from Russia and Central Asia. |
Some 80% of the output of this factory used to be sent to Russia and other Soviet republics in Soviet times.
There are two boiler-houses, which were built to provide average pressure and temperature; 1,300-ton-capacity crude oil tanks; repair shops for machinery, construction and electrical devices; a vehicle depot; two laboratories; internal water pipes; cable lines of 6 kW; six substations of 6 kW; seven transformers with 560-1,600 kW; a railroad, and other equipments and facilities.
A total of 130 people are currently employed in the enterprise. The factory produced 417 tons of open wires and 1,200 km of various types of cables in 2001.
The factory of technical rubber has been operating since 1968. The total area of the factory is 10.4 hectare, while the production area is 28,560 square meters. The main production area of the factory is made up of six workshops, a laboratory, a compressor, pump stations, pasting shop, repair workshop, transportation, refrigerator, boiler-house and storehouse. A total of 1,200 people worked in this factory in 1990.
The factory is specialized on the production of the following products: transportation ribbons, bents, rubber pipes, shaped or unshaped rubber products, chemical plugs, rubber products for railroad and rubber mixture.
The factory is capable of producing 3,000 kinds of rubber products. Moreover, the average output of the factory is 2,600 tons of shaped rubber products per year. These products are used in oil machinery, oil transportation, the exploitation of oil derricks, irrigation systems, railroads, agriculture, poultry and other fields. The average output of the enterprise is 8.6m meters per year. Transportation ribbons and bents with 100 – 1,400 mm width and 3-8 layers are used in cotton and grain growing and various industrial fields. The factory’s output for transportation ribbons is 1m square meters and for bents – 1.4m square meters.
Bents of 3x450x3,000 mm, 4x250x100 mm and 4x400x7,000 mm size have brands as follows:
AB brand with 1,000 mm – 1,600 mm length;
BV brand with 1,000 mm – 5,600 mm length;
SV brand with 2,120 mm – 7,100 mm length;
