Mingechevir
Hydroelectric Power Station
The River Kur narrows on its
course near the Bozdag Mountain, which is why the Mingechevir hudroelectric
power stattion was decided to be built on this site in 1945. A soil dam was
built on the River Kur (the Mingechevir dam is considered to be the highest one
of the same type of dams in the world). The Mingechevir Hydroelectric Power
Station was put into operation in 1954. Not only Azerbaijan, but the entire
Transcaucasus region benefits from cheap energy provided by this station. The
water of the Mingechevir reserviour is used to irrigate 16,000 hectare area
nearby.
